DESCRIPTION - What Does 2019 Hold for the Innovation Economy

Intellectual Property (“IP”) is critical for exploiting the growth and innovation potential of Canadian businesses. 2018 saw the Government of Canada announce a national IP Strategy, initiate funding for the Innovation Supercluster Initiative, and sign a new free trade agreement, all with a view to helping Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs better protect and promote innovation. As part of that national IP strategy, Canada has been and will continue to modernize its IP regime. As a result, 2019 will continue to see a number of significant changes to the Canadian IP landscape come into force.

Canadian businesses need to understand how all of these will impact their IP strategies in Canada and beyond. Our panel will review and highlight the more significant of these changes to help your business not only remain competitive but thrive, including:

• Madrid isn’t just a city in Spain! Changes to obtaining trademarks in Canada
• Changes to Canada’s “Notice and Notice” takedown regime
• Changes to IP enforcement at the border
• New mechanisms to challenge “bad faith” trademarks
• Changes to the Canadian Patent Regime: are they good for patent owners?
